Castor Oil Derivatives

Castor oil is a natural product obtained from the seeds of the miracle tree (Ricinus communis), a spurge plant. The structure of castor oil consists of 80 to 85 % of the triglyceride of ricinoleic acid, an unsaturated fatty acid with exceptional chemical properties. In addition to a hydroxyl group, it possesses an isolated double bond. This structure gives castor oil a high viscosity and remarkable resistance to oxidation.

In technical applications, it is therefore used as an additive for lubricants in metalworking, combustion engines or turbines. The content of approx. 5 % hydroxyl groups in ricinoleic acid makes castor oil suitable for use as a raw ingredient for binders in air-drying paints and emulsion paints – but also in reaction masses such as polyurethane coatings for various industrial applications in corrosion protection and in the construction sector. In addition to its use in its unmodified form, castor oil allows a wide range of chemical reactions, resulting in a broad spectrum of applications.
