Emollients
Emollients: Key Ingredients for Smooth Skin
Vegetable oils and fats are lipids, whereby glycerin as a trivalent alcohol is esterified with higher fatty acids to form triglycerides. The resulting emollients fulfill a variety of functions in cosmetic formulations, depending on the main fatty acids used. They can be used as solvents for UV filters, pigments, or active ingredients. In skin care products, they are primarily intended to make the skin soft and supple. Depending on the type and concentration used, they have a major influence on the texture, sensory properties, and consistency of a product. Ester oils are used in skin and hair care formulations as well as in decorative cosmetics. For this reason, polarity and spreading behavior play an important role, especially in topical applications.
A distinction is made between fast, slow, and medium spreading variants. Their targeted combination and the differentiation between various spreading cascades are largely responsible for the sensory properties of a product, i.e. the skin feel during and after application, as well as penetration. Other components can modulate the sensorial experience. Emollients and other vegetable or synthetic oils are the basic components in cosmetic products, and are used in larger or smaller proportions depending on the formulations. Quality and origin are therefore of great importance. The BergaCare products speak for themselves when it comes to setting market standards.
