Emulsifier
The Role of Emulsifiers: Stability and Texture in Skin Care Products
Emulsions are among the most frequently used systems in the cosmetic world for combining oil components with other aqueous and partially moisturizing components. The great advantage of emulsions is that they provide the skin with both lipids and moisture, and can therefore offer good care for a healthy skin. Consistency and texture largely determine the form in which the emulsion is presented, i.e. whether it is a milky lotion or a rich cream, how stable it is, and what it looks like. To produce stable emulsions, depending on the formulation suitable emulsifiers and possibly co-emulsifiers with amphiphilic properties are required, whose interaction also influences the texture and sensory properties of the system. The choice and composition of the lipophilic phase are likewise important.
Oil-in-water emulsions are the most common types of emulsion, in contrast to water-in-oil emulsions. The latter typically provide a very rich feeling on the skin. “Emulsifier-free” products are becoming increasingly popular for reasons of better skin compatibility and the desire for novelties to present to consumers. Solid particles such as fibers are suitable for “Pickering emulsions” in order to live up to this claim and still be able to produce stable systems from the two phases of water and oil. These contain insoluble fiber and water-soluble colloids. The BergaMuls product range includes different raw material concepts and formulation ideas based on vegetable and natural fibers.
