N-butyl oleate is formed by the condensation of oleic acid (a monounsaturated fatty acid) and butanol. It is a colorless liquid with a faint odor. The compound is virtually insoluble in water. It is used as a plasticizer (especially PVC), solvent, lubricant, and waterproofing agent in coatings and polishes; also as a plasticizer for natural and synthetic rubbers, an agricultural defoamer, and a fragrance additive.
